Luxembourg City, Luxembourg (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of seeded women suffered setbacks Wednesday at the Luxembourg Open tennis event.

German Annika Beck ousted fifth-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in second-round action, while resurgent German Andrea Petkovic took down seventh- seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in round one on the indoor hardcourts at Kockelscheuer Sport Centre. Bouchard reached her first-ever WTA final last week in Japan, losing to former U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur in Osaka.

Also in the second round in Luxembourg, eighth-seeded Serb Bojana Jovanovski avoided an upset by handling Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh 6-1, 6-4 and Polish qualifier Katarzyna Piter overcame Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Piter will face Beck in Friday's quarterfinals.

One other first-round match saw Czech qualifier Tereza Smitkova dismiss France's Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 6-1.

This week's top-three seeds -- former world No. 1 and 2008 Luxembourg runner- up Caroline Wozniacki, American Sloane Stephens and Wimbledon runner-up and 2009 Luxembourg finalist Sabine Lisicki -- will play second-round matches on Thursday.

The 2013 Luxembourg champion will take home $44,000.
