MACON, Ga. (School Release) - The Mercer women's soccer team clinched a spot in the Atlantic Sun Championship for the seventh-straight season after a 1-0 win over Jacksonville on Friday evening at Bear Field.
Mercer (10-3-3, 4-0-2 A-Sun) extended its unbeaten streak to nine games, 7-0-2, and moved into sole possession of first place in the A-Sun Conference standings with three games remaining in the 2012 season.
The Bears had the best scoring chance of either side in the 20th minute of the first half when a shot from sophomore Tess Patton caromed off the far post and back into play to keep the game scoreless.
The Orange and Black didn't waste any time re-grouping after intermission and jumping in front of the Dolphins in the early moments of the second half. Sophomore Lauren Gassie cut inside on the left edge of the 18-yard box and fired a shot that was saved by Jacksonville goalkeeper Jill D'Amico. However, the rebound went right to sophomore Washida Blackman who deposited a shot into the back of the net to give Mercer a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.
That would be all the offense the Bears would need, as the Mercer defense held Jacksonville to just one shot on goal in the contest to pick up the win.
With the win, Mercer has now won at least 10 games in five out of the last six seasons. The Bears are now just one win away from tying the 2007 and 2008 squads, with 11 wins, for the most wins in a season in program history.
Mercer returns to action for its final home game of the season on October 14 against North Florida. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bear Field and will double as Senior Day for midfielders Danielle Hesse and Patricia-Anne Upson.
