MACON, Ga.-- Today was just another day for students at Mount de Sales Academy in Macon, until a morning assembly stirred up the crowd.

Senior Maggie Midkiff had no idea she was walking into a school-wide assembly about her.

"This morning I asked my teacher what it was going to be about," explained Midkiff.  "So I came in here thinking we were about to get yelled at."

It was just the opposite.  Maggie was recognized for being the state finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman award.  Candidates are selected based on their work in the classroom, performance on the field and their involvement in the community.

Midkiff already knew about the state award, but the next part was a complete surprise.

"When they started saying something about the Heisman my heart kind of started racing, but I didn't know," said Midkiff.

Maggie is one of 12 finalists in the nation who will travel to New York City in December.  One male and one female will be chosen and receiver a crystal high school Heisman trophy, $10,000 for their school and recognition during the collegiate Heisman ceremony.

"Obviously, she's an outstanding athlete, but what she does outside of that, in the classroom, she's student council president.  She's just one of those great kids," said Mount de Sales president David Held.

"She's a great player, but also a great person," said girls soccer coach Scott Serafy.  "She has leadership qualities and rallies other girls around her."
