Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) - Dawson Odums' interview for the Southern University's head football coach's position basically was three months long.

Having taken over as the team's interim coach after two games this season, Odums produced strong enough results to reportedly earn athletic director William Broussard's recommendation that he become the full-time head coach.

The Advocate reported late Thursday that Broussard will recommend Odums as the next head coach to Southern's system board of supervisors at their on-campus meeting Friday. Odums took over the program's interim lead after former coach Stump Mitchell was reassigned following an 0-2 start this season and a 6-18 record in just over two seasons.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference program posted a 4-5 record behind Odums, including wins over rivals Jackson State, Florida A&M and Grambling State.

Odums is one of the two final candidates for the Southern position along with Nevada tight ends and offensive line coach James Spady, a former offensive coordinator at Grambling State.

Odums joined Mitchell's staff this past spring, starting as defensive line coach and then as defensive coordinator. The 1997 graduate of North Carolina Central served previously as the defensive coordinator at Division II Clark before becoming its interim head coach in 2004. He also was an assistant coach at George Washington, Georgia Southern and North Carolina A&T.
