Conway, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - D.J. Covington scored 21 points, grabbed nine
rebounds and blocked four shots to help lead his Virginia Military Keydets to
a 90-77 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in the quarterfinal
round of the Big South Conference Tournament at HTC Center.
Rodney Glasgow netted 20 points with four rebounds and five assists for VMI
(19-11), while QJ Peterson chipped in with 19 points and six boards. Jordan
Weethee and Tim Marshall scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to round out
the Keydets' double-digit scorers. VMI will face Coastal Carolina in the
semifinal round of the Big South Tournament on Saturday.
Jerome Hill tallied a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds
for Gardner-Webb (18-15). Tyler Strange contributed 15 points, and Onzie
Branch added 13 with five rebounds. The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped two of their
last three contests.
VMI connected on 48.5 percent of its first-half shots from the floor,
including 2-of-9 from 3-point range, and took a 39-28 lead into the
intermission. Gardner-Webb shot just 30.3 percent, and missed all five of its
3-point tries in the first frame.
The Keydets improved to 53.1 percent shooting in the second half, and made 5-
of-11 from deep and 12-of-19 from the free-throw line. The Runnin' Bulldogs
brought their shooting percentage up in the period, but just to 33.3 percent.
Gardner-Webb did hit 19-of-26 from the foul line in the half, but fell behind
by an additional two points in the Keydets' eventual 13-point victory.
VMI had the edge in points in the paint, 46-36, and in points off turnovers,
