Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Baron finished with a career-high 38
points and knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining
in the second overtime as the Canisius Golden Griffins captured a 94-91 win
over the Rider Broncs in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the
Koessler Athletic Center.
Baron converted 11-of-19 shots from the floor and 12-of-13 at the free-throw
line for the Golden Griffins (10-6, 4-1 MAAC), adding seven rebounds and seven
assists along the way. Jordan Heath posted 17 points and nine blocked shots to
set a school record before fouling out. Zach Lewis and Phil Valenti both
tallied 12 points, the latter clearing a game-high nine rebounds, as the squad
won for the second time in three tries.
The Broncs (7-7, 3-2) were paced by Anthony Myles who dropped in a career-high
30 points, connecting on 13-of-15 shots at the charity stripe. Zedric Sadler
delivered 16 points, Kahlil Thomas 12 and Shawn Valentine 11 points off the
bench in the team's second straight setback.
In addition to shooting 50.0 percent from the field in the first half, Rider
also knocked down an impressive 6-of-9 shots behind the 3-point line in order
to take a 37-31 lead at the break.
In the second half Canisius fought back with 57.9 percent accuracy from the
floor, while a 2-of-11 showing beyond the arc by the visitors left the squads
knotted at 69-69 and headed to overtime.
Baron not only hit the game-winning shot, he was also responsible for sending
the meeting into that second overtime after converting a lay-up and a free
throw with 10.6 seconds to play in the first bonus period.
Featuring 13 ties and 14 lead changes, the largest lead for Canisius on the
night was just five points in the second overtime.
