Niagara, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Deon Jones and Andrew Nicholas both scored
14 points as the Monmouth Hawks defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles, 85-74,
in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Gallagher Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Hawks (8-8, 2-3 MAAC) were Justin
Robinson and Chris Brady with 13 points apiece as the squad picked up a second
win in the last three outings.
The Purple Eagles (4-12, 1-4) were led by Antoine Mason who tallied a game-
high 24 points, hitting all but one of his 15 free-throw attempts. Marvin
Jordan pitched in with 12 points, Tahjere McCall 11 and Rayvon Harris 10
points and six rebounds in their third loss in as many games.
Monmouth exploded for 65.2 percent shooting from the field in the first half,
including 3-of-6 behind the 3-point line, as the team claimed a 35-32
advantage at the break. The Purple Eagles managed to stay within striking
distance thanks to a 7-2 edge at the free-throw line and 10 turnovers by the
Hawks in the period.
In the second half the visitors again shot very well (.600), but at the same
time fumbled the ball away another 12 times, allowing Niagara to stick around
a bit too long before locking up the double-digit win. The hosts converted
only 8-of-27 (.296) from the field over the final 20 minutes of action.
Niagara actually outscored the Hawks at the charity stripe, 30-26, but could
not overcome 20 turnovers of its own and just 6-of-23 accuracy beyond the arc.
