Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Tyler Haws scored a game-high 25 points,
leading four players in double figures, as the BYU Cougars cruised to a 79-62
win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the quarterfinals of the NIT at
Reed Green Coliseum.
Brock Zylstra accounted for 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the
third-seeded Cougars (24-11), shooting 5-of-9 behind the 3-point line along
the way. Matt Carlino contributed 15 points, nine dishes and six boards,
followed by Brandon Davies who logged a double-double with 12 points and a
team-high 13 rebounds in the triumph.
The top-seeded Golden Eagles (27-10) were paced by Daveon Boardingham with 18
points and Jerrold Brooks 13, while Jonathan Mills accounted for a game-high
15 rebounds in the losing cause.
Southern Miss opened the contest on a 5-0 run, but the Cougars returned the
favor with an 11-0 scoring run of their own immediately thereafter, the
visitors eventually posting a 40-29 lead at the break.
In the second half the BYU defense held the home team to just 33.3 percent
shooting from the floor, including 1-of-7 behind the 3-point line, sealing the
victory for the Cougars.
The Golden Eagles finished the night hitting only 4-of-17 on the perimeter and
16-of-27 (.593) at the free-throw line.
With the victory the Cougars will now take on Baylor in the semifinals at
Madison Square Garden on April 2 after the Bears defeated Providence on
Wednesday night, 79-68.
