Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Francisco Liriano pitched seven shutout innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Chicago Cubs, 1-0, in the middle test of a three-game series.

Liriano (3-0) had nine strikeouts and allowed just two hits and a walk in his outing.

The 29-year-old Liriano signed with the Pirates this past offseason but injured his non-throwing arm and began the season on the disabled list. Since making his season debut on May 11, he has given up two runs over 18 innings.

Mark Melancon allowed runners on first and second in the ninth but escaped trouble to notch his first save.

Garrett Jones drove in the lone run of the game, a two-out single off Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija (2-6) in the first inning that scored Andrew McCutchen.

Samardzija fanned eight and gave up three hits and a walk. However, the lack of offense prevented him from getting the win.
