HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Mercer Release) - The Mercer women's soccer team received goals from eight different players on its way to a 10-0 season opening victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field.
Mercer's 10 goals are the most scored by the squad in a single game since downing South Carolina State 12-0 back in 2004.
The Bears didn't take long to score their first goal of the 2013 season courtesy of a well-executed short corner just one minute and 30 seconds into the game. Junior Brianna Stampler touched a ball off to classmate Lauren Gassie who served a ball that Tess Patton promptly headed home to give Mercer an early 1-0 lead.
The Orange and Black jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute of play when Gassie fed a ball to senior Casey Barrett who connected on a give-and-go with junior Washida Blackman who blasted a shot past the Alabama A&M keeper.
Mercer's offense really started clicking from that point forward, as goals from Stampler, Gassie and freshman Annie Barrett over the next four minutes of play pushed the Bears out to a 5-0 lead.
Leading 6-0 to start the second half, the Bears received goals by freshman Katelyn Dimopoulos, junior MacKenzie Stewart, sophomore Sydney Brogden and Annie Barrett to conclude the scoring in the contest.
Gassie tied her career-high with four points on one goal and two assists in the game while Brogden collected her first multi-goal performance of her career in the win.
All three Mercer goalkeepers logged time in the contest with sophomore Maggie Cropp earning the start and senior Nikki Atkinson and freshman Cristina Mursuli each making a save apiece in the win.
Mercer is back in action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts in-state rival Georgia State on Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. at Bear Field.
