MACON, Ga. - The Mercer University Athletics Department, in conjunction with the 100 Black Men of Macon-Middle Georgia and the Motivating Youth Foundation, are proud to announce that renowned former National Football League head coach Tony Dungy will be speaking at Mercer University on Wednesday, October 2 in the University Center.
The "Tony Dungy Banquet" will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the floor of Hawkins Arena.
"It is such an honor to be able to host a person with the moral standing and reputation of Coach Dungy here at Mercer University," said Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole. "Coach Dungy is someone I have respected for quite some time and I think it will be a privilege to hear him speak. I cannot think of a better person to help mold and shape our student-athletes than Coach Dungy"
Dungy is best known for being the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001 and head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 to 2008. He was one of the most popular NFL coaches in the league and friends consider him to be a family man of great faith and Christian character.
Dungy became the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl when his Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Dungy set a new NFL record for consecutive playoff appearances by a head coach in 2008 after securing his 10th-straight playoff appearance with a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Dungy retired as coach of the Colts after the 2008-2009 season. Since retirement, Dungy has served as an analyst on NBC's "Football Night in America" and as the national spokesman for the fatherhood program All Pro Dad.
