MACON, Ga. (School Release)- The Mercer women's basketball team used a season-best defensive effort to pull out a 53-31 win over Lipscomb on Senior Night on Monday evening at Hawkins Arena.
Mercer (19-8, 13-3 A-Sun) forced Lipscomb into 25 turnovers and held the Bisons to a season-low 31 points in the win. Mercer's 19 wins thus far in the 2012-13 season is the most in a single-season for the program since the 1991-92 edition of the Bears went 20-8.
Sophomore Precious Bridges scored a game-high 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field in the win while senior Sharmesia Smith recorded her second-straight double-double with 11 points and a career-high tying 17 rebounds.
Mercer wasted little time jumping out to a big lead against Lipscomb in the early moments of the game.
The Bears ripped off a 14-0 over the first 5:37 of the contest to set the tone. Bridges and Smith each had four points apiece during the early surge.
Mercer's defense would take over from there, holding Lipscomb to just 16 percent shooting from the field and three made field goals compared to 13 turnovers on its way to a 25-10 halftime lead.
The Orange and Black started the second half with a similar aggressiveness that they used to build their lead in the first half. Mercer kicked off the second stanza on an 11-2 run to make the score 36-12 with 16:06 remaining in the contest.
The Bears kept a comfortable lead for the remainder of the contest, never letting Lipscomb close to within 19 points the rest of the way.
Junior Sharnea Boykin tallied nine assists and tied her season-high with four steals in the win.
Mercer now heads to the Sunshine State for its final road trip of the 2013 regular season starting with a game against Florida Gulf Coast on February 28. Game time is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. at Alico Arena.
