Head Coach Bobby Lamb is pleasantly surprised.
"We've executed a lot better on offense and defense than I thought we would."
The team's numbers are impressive, but its real season starts this week. Mercer's first conference opponent, the Drake Bulldogs, welcome the Bears to the Pioneer Football League on Saturday.
"Our stats look really good. Obviously, the teams we're about to play are a lot better," said Lamb.
He's got a point. Mercer's three wins are against first-year teams. Drake has over 50 upperclassmen on its roster.
"We're playing against a lot of juniors and seniors and some fifth year seniors," said Lamb. "And of course we're all freshmen."
How do you prepare for a match like that?
"We probably need to improve in the weight room more than anything, and we don't have time to do that. We're playing against full-grown men this week," said Lamb.
The Bears can't bulk up to Drake's level by Saturday, but they've had plenty of time to talk about the game. Its been a topic of conversation since spring. None of the Bears' first three opponents had game film from 2012.
"We've been talking about this game for a very long time," said quarterback John Russ.
"That was the first game that we really knew what the opponent was like," said Lamb.
Drake's football team may be bigger. It might be faster. It is more experienced. Mercer's players aren't worried about that. They know what Drake brings to the field, and they're ready to compete.
"[We're] never scared," said Russ. "That's the competitor in us and in me."
"We wanna come out and shock the world," said linebacker Tyler Ward.
According to Lamb, that mentality might just give the Bears a chance to keep on rolling.
"Their confidence is sky-high. No matter who walks in here Saturday, they think they can win. And that's half the battle."
Drake is 1-2 right now, but it's a tough Pioneer Football League opponent. The Bulldogs are PFL champions two years running.
Mercer and Drake play this Saturday at 1 pm, at Mercer University Stadium.
