MACON-- When Mercer breaks the huddle for the first time on August 31, they'll be working out of the pistol.  Quarterback John Russ will have two different weapons to use in the backfield.

Payton Usher is a 5'7, 162 pound running back from Newnan, Georgia.  He's got the speed and the quick cuts to find a hole.  Caleb Brown is a little bigger at 5'8, 207 pounds.  Brown says their styles complement each other well.

"[Payton] is definitely more shifty of the two," explained Brown.   "I've got a little strength on him, but I definitely love having him in the backfield with me. It's definitely effective because what he lacks I have and what I lack he obviously has. So, it works out.  Of course, it's good to have two backs so you don't die out there if you're the only guy."

For Usher, Mercer's offense was a whole new ball game.

"Coming out of high school we ran the wing-T. So, this is totally new to me," said Usher.  "I've never been out of the gun or anything.  Its been hard to cope with that, but I've gotten it down because we had a whole year last year to deal with it and then the start of this year. I feel way more comfortable this year then I did last year."

After Saturday's scrimmage, head coach Bobby Lamb brought up another name:  Alex Lakes.  Lakes transferred from West Georgia and had a great showing in the first scrimmage of fall camp.  He is ineligible this year, but hopes to get in the mix in 2014.
