MACON, Ga. - After helping the Mercer baseball team to its first Atlantic Sun Regular Season Title in program history and second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, junior designated hitter Nick Backlund was named a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America Second Team selection as announced by the organization on Wednesday afternoon.
Backlund was one of only four players in the state of Georgia to be recognized on the list and was one of just two players representing the Atlantic Sun Conference, joining East Tennessee State starting pitcher Kerry Doane.
The San Jose, Calif. native once again put up power numbers that rivaled the top hitters in the nation in 2013. He led the A-Sun Conference with 68 RBI, 22 doubles, 13 home runs and a .592 slugging percentage. Backlund also finished second in the league with 140 total bases, sixth with a .426 on-base percentage and eighth with 79 hits.
Backlund, who was also named a second team All-American by the NCBWA in 2012, will return to campus this fall leading all active A-Sun Conference players with a .623 career slugging percentage and 29 home runs.
