Learning a new sport can be difficult, but some special help from current and former Mercer University players made it a little easier for kids with the Macon Youth Lacrosse Club.

"When I first started, I didn't know how to cradle, and now I've become a master," says second grader Eli Miscall from Macon.

The Mercer players come a few times a week, teaching everything from skill-building to the importance of teamwork.

"They helped me a lot. They helped me learn from the day I started. They helped learn how to shoot and catch and pass," says fifth grader Braxton Jones.

Former Mercer player Colton Mattei says, "It's kind of fun seeing them learn the game, because I know I'm just starting out as well in terms of this team, but during a lot of the season the kids cant throw and catch, but hopefully later on they'll be able to know the game of lacrosse and be able to watch and actually enjoy it."

First year Mercer University Head Coach Kyle Hannan moved to Macon from Maryland, a lacrosse hot bed.

He says, "I didn't know what to expect or how much excitement there would be about lacrosse, and to my surprise there's quite a but of excitement here in middle Georgia and the Macon area."

He's taking on the challenge of building his team, while also growing the sport throughout the region.

Mercer has the only division one team in the state. Hannan hopes that will change, and high schools will jump on board as well.
