STATESBORO, Ga. - Senior Jamie Duffy had a team-high 21 digs to go along with seven kills in Mercer's 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) loss to Georgia Southern on Tuesday night at the W.S. Hanner Fieldhouse. The Bears' loss sent the team to 2-2 on the year, while Georgia Southern moved to 5-2 overall.
Duffy's seven kills came on 24 attempts with only three errors. Sophomore Caroline Carlton chipped in six kills of her own with only two errors on 18 swings.
Freshman Molly Locke also tallied seven kills to go along with 10 digs, two assists, a service ace and a block. Senior Monica Sanchez had her fourth-straight game with 20 or more assists, dishing out 23 helpers while also adding six digs, two block assists, a kill and a service ace.
In the first set, Mercer held a 22-20 advantage before the Eagles ripped off five straight points to end the frame. Georgia Southern moved away from a 6-6 tie in the second set with consecutive points and held the advantage the remainder of the stanza.
The final featured nine tie scores and four lead changes. Mercer trailed 8-7 before scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 14-9 lead, but Georgia Southern battled back to tie the set at 18-18 before sealing the victory.
Mercer returns to action on the road in the Georgia State Invitational on Friday. The Bears start the two-day event with a matchup against South Alabama on Friday evening at 5 p.m.
