CBS Corp. plans to launch an online news channel to tap an audience segment that is not watching the evening network news, according to executives familiar with the project.
The channel, which is a collaboration between CBS News and the interactive division, may not be launched for months as it seeks technology partners for distribution. It will likely appear as an app on smartTVs, tablets, smartphones and other streaming platforms.
Similar to ESPN's SportsCenter, breaking news will be aired as it happens while some parts of the newscast will be repeated throughout the day. It'll have a few staffers but plans to mostly use video and reporting from CBS News and 60 Minutes. CBSNews.com will continue to operate separately in its current format, with a mix of stories and video.
CBS' plans were first reported by news site BuzzFeed.com.
