GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - The large bronze statue of a tiger at the Brenau University campus in Gainesville finally has a name.
University officials dubbed the statue "Lucile" after holding a naming contest earlier this year.
The Times of Gainesville (http://bit.ly/GFw6vR ) reports that the name honors Lucile Townsend Pearce, wife of former Brenau president Haywood Jefferson Pearce. When her husband died in the 1940s, she served as chairwoman of the committee that ran the college for two years.
Two of Lucile Pearce's grandchildren, Sissy Lawson and Gayle Dunlap, were at the naming ceremony last week.
The statue weighs 2,200 pounds and is 7 feet tall.
