HAMILTON, Ga. (AP) - Harris County schools Superintendent Craig Dowling has announced he will be retiring Jan. 1.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/14rahKV ) Dowling had been the superintendent for four and a half years. He had previously served as an assistant superintendent for Rockdale County Schools near Atlanta for four years.
Dowling says in a statement that he is "extremely proud of the school district accomplishments both at the district and school level."
School board chairwoman Karen Hopkins says the board will move quickly to formulate a plan to find a successor.
The newspaper says Dowling was hired in May 2009, from a pool of 44 applicants. His initial contract was for three years and worth $135,000. His current salary was not immediately available.
