Eatonton is a classic example of an all-American Southern town, complete with a courthouse square.
But the iconic Putnam County Courthouse dome was damaged during hailstorms last winter.
"It tore up the roof and all the metal around the edges," says Putnam County maintenance technician Torrey Whittaker. "So they're going to have to replace it."
Now, scaffolding covers the front of the dome as crews have been working to fix it for the last four months.
Fixing the courthouse roof and the clocktower cost just over 400 thousand dollars, according to County Manager Paul Van Haute. The county is also working on a few other hail-damaged properties such as the old armory and old jail.
Whittaker expects the work to be complete in a few more months. Some locals say they're excited.
"When people drive through our town, they're going to stop and look," says Bridgit Grant, who works at one of the shops in the courthouse square. "It's so iconic here, it's gorgeous, it's beautiful."
