ATLANTA (AP) -- Emory Healthcare in Atlanta is reaching out to thousands of surgical patients after realizing that some discs used to store patient information have gone missing.

Emory says it began sending out letters Tuesday to about 315,000 patients who were treated at Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown (formerly Emory Crawford Long Hospital) and The Emory Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center between September 1990 and April 2007.

Emory says the 10 backup discs were removed from a storage location sometime between Feb. 7 and Feb. 20.

Emory is providing access to identity protection services to all affected patients.

About 228,000 of the records included Social Security number, while about 87,000 others did not.

Emory was notifying patients by mail and by a notice on its website.
