A racing legend is making a return to Byron this weekend at the Middle Georgia Raceway. Richard Petty is coming for Saturday's 3rd Annual Middle Georgia Raceway Reunion Festival.
A portion of the proceeds will go to Petty's charity, Victory Junction, a camp for children who are chronically or terminally ill.
On Monday, the raceway is just beginning preparations for the event. Middle Georgia Raceway started to mow the lawn on their property.
Thornton said they expect anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 people.
Thornton said they reached out to Richard Petty through contacts and by letter, reminding him of history at the track.
"There were nine of those races here from '66 to '71 he participated in eight of them won the first one, won four of the eight races he ran in and had top ten finishes," said Thornton.
Thornton says Petty agreed to come because of that history and to have a portion of the proceeds donated to charity.
It will cost you 10 dollars to attend the 3rd Annual Middle Georgia Raceway Racers Reunion Festival, and it's free for children 10 and under.
If you participate in the VIP experience and meet and greet with Richard Petty, that will run 100 dollars. Thornton says those who are not VIP's are not guaranteed an autograph from Petty.
