Early Sunday morning, Houston County 911 received a call about a car accident on Duke Road, near the intersection of Toomer Road, off of Highway 224 in Perry, where one passenger died and two others were injured.
Emergency services arrived on scene and said they found three people in a 2010 Ford Mustang GT that had crashed. They identified the driver as 44-year-old Danny Ray Wheeler, who they said lived on Toomer Road.
Due to Wheeler's serious injuries, he was flown by helicopter to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.
The two other passengers were 26-year-old Michael Spence who was later taken to the Medical Center, where he is listed as stable.
The front seat passenger 17-year-old Colten Joseph Winkler died as a result of the crash, the sheriff's office said.
The Houston County Sheriff's Office said Wheeler faces felony charges and several traffic charges currently. They believe that alcohol contributed to the accident.
In their investigation, Houston County deputies learned that after leaving a party on Toomer Road, several people from that party traveled along Duke Road, where Wheeler's car and another started racing.
The sheriff's office said that Wheeler lost control of the car after maintaining a high speed. They said Wheeler's car traveled several hundred feet on the road's shoulder before hitting a fence and continued until striking a large tree.
The Houston County Sheriff's Office is asking that if anyone has any information about the accident, contact Cpl. Sean Alexander or Deputy Brandon Miller of the Houston County Sheriffs Office Traffic Division at 478-542-2080.
