Joe Allen has joined the crowded race for mayor of the new consolidated Macon-Bibb government.
Allen, a Bibb County commissioner, made his announcement Friday morning at the county courthouse.
He says the new consolidated government needs a transparent leader who would do more than sign bills and spend tax dollars.
"I plan to place people around me that are experts in all different kinds of fields of work, to help bring industry and trade in here. I plan to play a vital role. I won't just be a talking point to explain things to people. I'm going to be out and involved with it."
Allen is also a former water authority member, a retired firefighter and longtime organizer of the Christmas charity, Kids Yule Love.
Five other candidates are in the race: former Bibb Chairman Charlie Bishop, businessman David Cousino, former mayor C. Jack Ellis, Bibb Commission Chairman Sam Hart and current mayor Robert Reichert.
Qualifying begins April 22, and the election is July 16.
