Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Logan Thomas passed for a touchdown and ran for
another to lead the Virginia Tech Hokies past the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets,
17-10, on Thursday night.
Thomas completed 19-of-25 passes for 221 yards and had 16 carries for 58 yards
for Virginia Tech (4-1, 1-0 ACC), which has won four in a row against Georgia
D.J. Coles caught two passes for 34 yards and a touchdown for the Hokies, who
have gone 9-1 in their ACC openers since joining the conference in 2004.
Vad Lee connected on 7-of-24 passes for 144 yards and two interceptions for
the Yellow Jackets (3-1, 2-1), who had won six straight regular-season league
David Sims carried the ball 12 times for 37 yards and a score for Georgia
Tech. Zach Laskey rushed for 43 yards on seven carries.
The Yellow Jackets fumbled on their first possession of the game. Kyle Fuller
forced Lee to lose control of the ball and Brandon Facyson recovered for
Virginia Tech at the Georgia Tech 27. Two plays later, Coles caught a 21-yard
TD pass from Thomas.
Georgia Tech was driving on its next possession when Facyson picked off Lee at
the Virginia Tech 13.
The Hokies bridged the first and second quarters with a 10-play, 91-yard
scoring drive. Demitri Knowles and Willie Byrn caught passes of 28 and 12
yards, respectively, to put the ball in Georgia Tech territory. Byrn and
Knowles added catches of 13 and 22 yards, respectively, before Thomas' 5-yard
The Yellow Jackets got a 49-yard field goal from Harrison Butker to cut the
gap to 14-3 with 7:21 left in the half.
Georgia Tech scored a touchdown on its first possession of the second half. A
pair of penalties on Virginia Tech, including one on fourth down, led to Sims'
2-yard TD run.
Cody Journell made a 39-yard field goal early in the fourth to give the Hokies
a 17-10 lead.
On the ensuing possession, the Yellow Jackets were stopped on fourth down.
Lee was intercepted by Kendall Fuller with over a minute to play.
