Milledgeville's only soup kitchen, Cafe Central, moved to a new space two weeks ago that allows it to serve more people.
The building is located next door to Church Central, where the weekly home-cooked meals used to be held.
Cafe Central began last October when a local woman realized people in the area had a need for food. Ann Bowen, now the director, says the first serving only had 17 people.
Cafe Central can now serve more than 200 people in the new building. It also gives people an opportunity to enjoy a free meal in a restaurant style setting.
"We're going to have white tablecloths on the tables, we're going to use china, and chargers, and goblets, and real forks, and spoons, and knives rather than plastic ware," says Bowen.
Volunteers for the cafe are still not able to cook in the kitchen. It needs commercial flooring before they can put appliances in the new building.
But that doesn't stop Bowen from appreciating how far they have come. "We are so excited about that - to be able to show the dignity these people should be shown," she says.
Cafe Central serves one meal every Tuesday. It is located on S. Wilkinson St. in Milledgeville next to Church Central.
