As Central Georgia kids prepare to go back to school, their families will now buy supplies this year without the assistance of the Georgia tax free holiday.
However, several local organizations are stepping up to lend families a helping hand. Listed are a few organizations that will host back to school giveaways.
On Saturday July 24, Macedonia Church will give away supplies as part of its Love in Action community outreach program. The event will take place at the church from 8 a.m. to noon at the church on 600 Eisenhower Parkway. School supplies will be given away along with clothing, shoes, household items, and small appliances. Health fair featuring diabetes and vision checks will also take place. On Thursday July 29, the Mentors Project of Bibb County will hold its annual back to school giveaway event. They plan to give out free school supplies to students. Time and location to be announced. Contact: (478)765-8624
On Friday July 30, the Feed Center Outreach Ministry in Fort Valley will offer school supplies to students of all ages and will begin at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be at South Peach Park at 200 Morris St. In order to be eligible, you must fill out an application first. The deadline is July 15. Applications can be picked up at DFCS offices in Peach, Crawford and Macon counties as well as the Feed Center office (313 Carver Drive, Fort Valley). On Saturday July 31, Tremont Temple Church at 5263 Bloomfield Road will also hold a back to school event. This event goes from 10am to 3pm and is open to students of all ages (even college students). They will give away school supplies, free health and HIV screenings, and free haircuts. The church will also offer games, food, and entertainment. Contact: (478) 788-3004.
On Sunday Aug. 1, Youth in Action will host the College Fest Back to School Rally at Central City Park in Macon. The event will take place from 1pm-6pm. There will be free school supplies, free food/drinks, and Atlanta Dream ticket giveaways.
On Monday Aug. 2, the Baldwin County School system will hold its Educate to Graduate back to school event at the Baldwin County Stadium in Milledgeville. The event starts at 5pm. Free school supplies and food will be offered. There will also be door prizes. All students are welcome to attend.
If you would like to donate supplies, you can join 13WMAZ's Operation Back to School. On Thursday July 29, you can stop by Walmart locations in Macon, Warner Robins, Perry, Dublin, Forsyth, and Milledgeville and drop off school supplies in designated shopping carts located in the store.
