Hall of Famer and former all-time home run king Hank Aaron says Mark McGwire has a clean slate with Monday's admission that he used steroids in the year he broke baseball's home-run record.
"I think that it's wonderful that he did this," Aaron told USA TODAY. "It takes a big man to admit this and I want to commend him for that. A lot of people make mistakes, and for him to stand up and admit what he has done in the past, I think it's very admirable."
Aaron also said McGwire should get renewed consideration for the Hall of Fame. McGwire has never gained more than 23.7% of vote from members of the Baseball Writers Association of American in four years on the ballot.
"As far as I'm concerned he has asked for forgiveness," Aaron said. "He has my forgiveness. If that's all that stands in the way between him being inducted into Cooperstown we should all forgive him.
"He didn't commit murder. He didn't commit robbery. He said he took steroids."
