A Jones County man died after an apparent accidental shooting by his girlfriend, said Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece.
21-year-old John Stephen Spiers and 19-year-old Angel Barrett were playing with a gun Tuesday night at their Deer Creek Circle home, said Reece.
Barrett told sheriff's deputies that Spiers took the unloaded gun and pointed it at her. He pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. Barrett left the room to retrieve clothes from the dryer.
When she returned to the room, Reece said, she picked up the gun and pointed it at Spiers. She pulled the trigger, but this time the gun went off, he said. Spiers was hit with a bullet and died on the scene.
Barrett told deputies that her boyfriend must have loaded the gun when she left the room, said Reece.
Reece said deputies are consulting with prosecutors on whether to file charges.
Capt. Guy Mosteller of the sheriff's department says Spires was arrested in 2007 for allegedly pointing a gun at someone. He didn't know the outcome of that case.
