The Bibb County Sheriff's Office made two arrests in connection with an alleged armed robbery at an XMart on Emery Highway Sunday night.
Bibb County Sheriff's Investigators Ali Seckinger and Frank Thomas arrested 21-year-old, Randy Joseph Clark, for False Report of a Crime and Fiduciary Theft and 19-year-old Russell Alan Lewis Jr. for Theft by Taking.
According to a news release, Sergeant Brad Wolfe responded with other deputies to the scene. Sergeant Wolfe was patrolling the area earlier that night. He was using the Sheriff's Office newest tool in fighting crime, the "Automatic License Plate Recognition System".
The release says Sergeant Wolfe remembered seeing a white 90's model Honda Accord pull out of the XMart parking lot onto Emery Highway Sunday night. While Sergeant Wolfe was traveling behind the Honda Accord, the Automatic License Plate Recognition System took a photograph of the vehicle and tag, recording the vehicle's information into a database system.
Sergeant Wolfe spotted the same vehicle Monday evening and conducted a traffic stop. Wolfe asked the driver, Russell Alan Lewis Jr., if he was on Emery Highway Sunday night. Lewis said, "No".
Wolfe checked the Automatic License Plate Recognition System computer and saw that Lewis lied. The information was turned over to investigators and they followed up by going to Lewis' apartment. When they knocked on Lewis' door, his roommate Randy Joseph Clark answered.
Investigators found that Clark was the clerk at the XMart who claimed that the store was robbed Sunday evening.
After interviewing Clark and Lewis, investigators concluded that the store employee and his roommate planned the theft. Both men were arrested Wednesday night.
