Today, Congressman Sanford Bishop, a Democrat representing District 2, which encompasses part of Central Georgia, responded to the Supreme Court's ruling on the Voting Rights Act.

In a news release, Rep. Bishop commented on the High Court's decision to toss out a portion of the Act that determines which states fall under the act's provision.

"As citizens of this great country, one of our most cherished rights under the U.S. Constitution is our right to vote.  Personally, I am deeply disappointed in the Supreme Court's decision to nullify the coverage formula in Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, as it disregards the overwhelming evidence that discrimination still exists at the voting booth," he said.

The Court also ruled that Congress must revisit how affected states are determined.  In response, Rep. Bishop said, "Congress must now work in a bipartisan and responsible way to revise the coverage formula and ensure that voting rights will be protected into the future."

Supporters of the court's ruling contend that a new formula is overdue, since the existing one is nearly five decades old, and voting demographics have changed dramatically.
