Seven years of hard work have come to fruition for the City of Macon and Medical Center. They celebrated the completion of the New and Pine Streets Improvement Project today.

The project features a new median that helps to slow traffic, sidewalks with ramps, concrete that sets the crosswalk apart from the actual road, new trees and designated loading zones. It cost a little more than $1 million, which came from GDOT, the Medical Center and the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

Before the construction phase began sidewalks were cracked, handicap ramps were minimal and curbs were broken. Project Manager Wimberly Treadwell says it used to be a dangerous place.

"Box trucks, which are delivery trucks, parked in the center of the street and pedestrians routinely crossed in front of them leaving them unseen by cars and oncoming traffic. The new improvements are wonderfully friendly to the urban environment," she said.
