A Jones County man told deputies that he fatally shot his girlfriend while he handled his handgun, an incident report says.
The sheriff's office says it is investigating whether the death was an accident.
They say 22-year-old Brittany Grizzle died shortly after 8:30 Monday night.
An incident report from the Jones County Sheriff's Department says it happened in a home on the 3694 block of Joycliff Road.
The report says 27-year-old Waylon Goodson told deputies it happened while he was handling his .357 revolver.
A third person in the house called 911 to report it as an accidental shooting, the report says.
The report says deputies found Grizzle in Goodson's arms, and he told them, "he killed his girl."
It says, "He told me he was handling his .357 revolver, trying to get the four rounds lined up in the cylinder so they would be the next in line for the barrel. He told me that he had the hammer pulled back and the trigger pulled to release the cylinder and allow it to free spin."
A deputy asked Goodson if he had used alcohol or drugs recently, and he said no. Goodson has not been charged, and the case is still under investigation.
The report also says a child was present, but does not describe any details.
The sheriff's department has not released any more details on the shooting.
