Dozens of people gathered at Industrial Children's Home in Macon to participate in the Relay for Onde 5K. It was spearheaded by Marisol Ortiz, a Macon teen who was inspired by a student that she met while volunteering in Haiti.
People of all ages hit the ground running outside of the children's home for the Haitian teen.
Ortiz met Jean-Louis Onde while volunteering to help rebuild homes in Haiti. She said she is determined to make sure he gets the help he needs to accomplish his dreams to become a pediatrician.
Ortiz says they needed to raise $4,000 for his tuition and thanks to the community they have raised enough money to help him.
"It was less that we wanted to raise the money and more that we wanted people to help us raise the money we wanted people to feel like they can participate in something bigger than Macon, than our actual country so it's really cool that we met our goal," said Ortiz.
