SAVANNAH (AP) - Family members say four Georgians killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 16 in Laurens County were transporting packages, traveling on business and going to the doctor when tragedy struck.
Joel Moore of Clyo left home early Wednesday to travel to a meeting with co-workers at International Paper. Michael J. Smith of Covington was on the job as a contract truck-driver for FedEx. And Clayton and Josephine Warnock, a couple from Dublin, were heading to Atlanta for a doctor to check his pacemaker.
All of them died early Wednesday as 27 cars, pickup trucks and tractor-trailers braked, swerved and collided in a chain-reaction collision that also sent nine people to a hospital with injuries.
Authorities are investigating whether smoke from nearby fires may have mixed with fog and blinded drivers.
