A day after 49-year old Sammie Davis, Jr. was killed by a Macon Police officer at the Kroger on Pio Nono Avenue, friends held a small memorial to remember Davis as they knew him.
That meant sitting outside Kroger eating chips and drinking soda in the same spot they said Davis would come to from his nearby home every day.
Davis died Friday after being shot three times by Officer Clayton Sutton, who had been at the grocery to store to issue a warrant for Davis, according to Macon Police.
Shoppers at Kroger say they remember Davis as a friendly face who would often help them with their groceries and never bothered anyone. It's why they can't understand why the officer would have shot Davis.
"I just don't understand why the police had to shoot that man three times," says Tom Howard, who says he's known Davis for 35 years. "This is really wrong."
Sutton has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation by the Macon Police Department.
