Peach County's sheriff says his deputies have spent much of the week investigating reports of a school-shooting threat.

He said they've come to the conclusion it was unfounded.

"We started calls about it Sunday night," said Sheriff Terry Deese. "We've been chasing rumors all week."

He said it started with a group of youths discussing the so-called Mayan Apocalypse allegedly due Friday, Dec. 21.

"Somebody said, 'You won't have to worry about that, somebody's coming to shoot up the school Thursday."

He said the matter was reported by parents, who said their children heard the story from other children. After interviewing multiple people, Deese said, investigators could find no actual threat.

Extra deputies stood by at Peach County High School Thursday, but there were no incidents, he said.

The Peach School district put out a news release Thursday afternoon that said, "In lieu of the recent event in Connecticut, we are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our students and faculty. There were no weapons found on Peach County High School campus."

School officials did not return our phone calls.
