Bibb County residents can apply for help with their energy bills this winter starting Monday morning.

The first session starts at 7 a.m. at St. Paul AME Church on Shurling Drive in Macon.

The Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council says low-income people can also apply on Dec. 7, 14, 15, 18 and 19.

All those sessions are at St. Paul's and start at 7 a.m.

In years past, applicants lined up for hours before the doors opened.

But some other counties accept applicants' appointments over the phone.

Jimmie Samuel, the executive director of the Macon-Bibb EOC, says the in-person applications are more efficient and that when they used phone reservations it backed up the lines.

"It knocked everybody off the system and it's all kind of confusion. We've been down that road we aren't going to ever do that again I'm tell you that now," said Samuel.

"We serve more people in less time than any other program," said Lonnie Miley, President of Board of Directors of Macon Bibb EOC. "It works so well so you know as they say if it ain't broke don't fix it our program ain't broke and there is no reason to try to fix it."

Applicants must have latest energy bill,  picture identifications, Social Security cards for all household members, and proof of income for the last 30 days.
