Federal agents are looking for a convicted kidnapper who escaped Saturday with five other inmates from the Emanuel County jail.

Cecil "Red" Nelson pleaded guilty in August to a federal charge of conspiracy to kidnap after he and two other men committed two abductions at gunpoint, holding the victims hostage until ransoms were paid.

The Emanuel County Sheriff's Department says the inmates escaped after someone left unlocked a door to the "pipe chaser," a utility closet-type area with access to the ceiling. The inmates then broke open a hatch to the roof.

It took jail officials 45 minutes to realize the men were missing. Three of the escapees have since been recaptured in Swainsboro.

According to the news release, special agent Mark F. Giuliano is in charge of the investigation and has announced a $5,000 reward in conjunction with Nelson's recapture.

Nelson is from Pembroke and investigators suspect he will  returni to that area. He is 33 years old, stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 245 lbs.

Anyone with information regarding Nelson's whereabouts can  contact either the Atlanta office FBI/Savannah Resident Agency at (912) 232-3716 or Savannah Crime Stoppers at (912) 234-2020.
