If you drove down First Street and heard Greek music or smelled some gyros, that's because the 5th Annual Central Georgia Greek Festival is under way this weekend.

The event is hosted by the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Chruch located at 859 First Street, and is going on Friday until 10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The festival offers Greek food including spanakopita, gyros and desserts like baklava.  It's also featuring live music and dancers.

Father John Stefero says despite having a much smaller population of Greek Americans in Central Georgia than in other parts of the country, he says turnout has been high and people are interested in Greek culture, especially the food.

"It's very interesting because what you find no matter where you are people are people and they're interested in learning about other cultures about other faiths and about people and they like the traditions and the customs."
