The Houston County School Board will decide in its meeting Tuesday whether to install cameras on the stop arms of some of its school buses.

The cameras would be used to take pictures of motorists who break the law by driving past a school bus loading or unloading students.

The move comes after school data shows during 2011 and 2012, an average of 61 stop-arm violations occurred each school day in Houston County.

If approved, the school district would hire a contractor to install the cameras.

The school district says the cameras would cost the district nothing. A contractor would pay to install and maintain the cameras and would receive part of the ticket revenue.

The school board will consider a  bid from an Arizona company, American Traffic Solutions, to install the cameras.

The district spokeswoman said the district is interested in installing the cameras to improve student safety on bus routes.
