Getting or renewing your Georgia driver's license or ID card now requires a couple of extra steps.

Thanks to the state's new "Secure ID" program, residents have to go in person to the driver services office to get their licenses or ID cards.  They also have to bring original documents to prove their identity and residency.

Some of the documents accepted to prove identity are a certified copy of a birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport or certification of U.S. citizenship.

Documents needed to prove residency include a recent utility bill, a bank statement or rental contract.

Special circumstances such as teenage drivers and out-of-state transfers require different documents as well.

The new law went into effect July 1, 2012.  For a complete list of acceptable documentation, click here.
