The 23-year-old mayor of Dawson, Ga., is in critical condition Friday after being shot in an apparent late night home robbery.

Mayor Chris Wright, who lives with his family, was shot multiple times, WXIA-TV reports.

The mayor was taken to a hospital in Albany, Ga., WALB-TV reports. His aunt, Ann Smalls, says Wright's mother was also tied up and injured during the incident, which occurred before midnight Thursday.

"We are very upset, we are very hurt that such an innocent person can be done like this," Smalls tells WALB.

A neighbor tells the Albany TV station that she was watching TV when she heard a loud noise that sounded like a firecracker.

Wright was 22 when he was elected last November as mayor of the town of 4,500 people located just northwest of Albany.
