SCLC Leader's Wife in Critical Condition after Stroke

ATLANTA (AP) - The wife of Southern Christian Leadership Conference president Joseph Lowery remains hospitalized in critical condition after a stroke.
WSB-TV ( ) quoted a family statement issued Saturday as saying Evelyn Lowery has irreversible damage. She was stricken on Wednesday.
A prayer vigil was being planned at SCLC headquarters in Atlanta.
The Rev. Joseph Lowery and his wife were in Birmingham, Ala., last weekend for the 50th anniversary of a racist church bombing that killed four black girls in 1963. The couple has been married for 65 years.
Evelyn Lowery founded the SCLC/Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now in 1979.
