COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Demonstrators who have opposed a military school at Fort Benning gathered near the Georgia Army base for a protest.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that a small group of supporters of School of the Americas Watch gathered outside the west Georgia base Friday morning to mark the 30th anniversary of a protest of Latin American soldiers training at the post in 1983.

The Rev. Roy Bourgeois, a Catholic priest and founder of School of the Americas Watch, said that protest was the foundation for starting SOA Watch.

SOA Watch organizes annual protests calling for closure of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation at Fort Benning. The Army school trains Latin American military officers. Critics say graduates used their U.S. military training to commit human rights abuses in their home countries.
