SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Airmen assigned to a Savannah-based unit of the Georgia Air National Guard are celebrating a big anniversary.

The 117th Air Control Squadron turns 65 years old on May 17. The unit was activated on that date in 1948 at Chatham Field in Savannah, where it's long since moved to a new headquarters at Hunter Arm Airfield.

To mark the occasion, airmen from the squadron held an open house at the Army post Saturday. Retirees and veterans of the unit joined current members to discuss the squadron's past and current missions and display its latest equipment.

The squadron is trained equipped to manage air battles and provide radar surveillance and air space control. It's also trained to help respond to state and national emergencies.
