TIFTON, Ga. (AP) - One south Georgia city is trying to make streets safer for cars to share with bicyclists.

WALB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/105W5hl ) the Tift Area Greenway Association has painted symbols in lanes of four roads in Tifton to alert drives that they could be sharing the street with cyclists. The symbols look like a person riding a bike with two arrows above them.

The group's president, Sharon Petzel, says crash statistics were used to decide where some of the markers went. She acknowledges some drivers have said they're not really sure what the roadway symbols mean.

The painted markers were paid for using grant money from the cycling advocacy group Georgia Bikes.
