BUFORD, Ga. (AP) - The condition of a school resource officer has improved after he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at a suburban Atlanta school.

Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter says 48-year-old Rolando Jimenez was directing traffic at Lanier High School in Buford when he was hit by a Jeep Wednesday morning.

Ritter tells the Gwinnett Daily Post Jimenez was thrown into the air by the force of the impact and landed on the pavement. Authorities say Jimenez was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious condition.

The officer's wife, Melissa, says Jimenez underwent surgery for internal bleeding and a broken jaw. He also suffered a broken pelvis and a knee injury.

Ritter says charges are pending against the driver of the Jeep.
