ATLANTA (AP) - Zoo Atlanta officials say a giraffe who died this week suffered from internal bleeding before her death.
Director of Veterinary Services at Zoo Atlanta Hayley Murphy says 7-year-old Mona showed no signs of illness or injury, and didn't exhibit changes in behavior before she died Wednesday.
The giraffes weren't on exhibit Wednesday because of wet conditions in their yard following heavy rains on Tuesday. Mona was in an outdoor corral when she collapsed.
Murphy says the University of Georgia Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service will conduct a test over the next eight to 10 weeks to determine whether Mona had any underlying health issues.
Officials say the zoo's remaining giraffes 7-year-old Abu, 6-year-old Glenda and Mona's 1-year-old daughter Lily, are adjusting to losing a member of their herd.
